The Cape Cod Museum of Natural History presents
SURF’S UP! Climate Change Detection Through Surfing
with Smartfin Founder Dr. Andrew Stern
BREWSTER, MAThe Cape Cod Museum of Natural History is proud to present SURF’S UP! Climate Change Detection Through Surfing with Smartfin Founder, Dr. Andrew Stern on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 1 pm.
The world’s oceans have played a critical role in human history. However, with the growth of modern industry, the oceans have also faced the effects intensifying climate change including the waters off Cape Cod. In response, environmentalist and surfer, Dr. Andrew Stern developed Smartfin, surfboard fins with sensors that will measure multiple ocean parameters including salinity, pH, temperature, GPS location, oxygen, chlorophyll, and wave characteristics.
The data surfers acquire while in the water will become accessible in near real-time to the worldwide scientific community for ocean research. Nearly half of humanity lives on the coasts, yet we are missing important near-shore data due to the difficulty of placing sensors in the relatively harsh surf zone. The Smartfin Project invites surfers worldwide to serve as citizen scientists and Earth advocates by simply doing what they love to do: surf!
Smartfin is an innovative collaboration with researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, one of the world’s leading institutions for oceanographic research, Surfrider Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s oceans through environmental activism, and Future Fins, the world’s leading surfboard fin manufacturer. Their hope is that Smartfin will also bring attention to ocean health, and help to galvanize local communities of surfers and non-surfers alike to come together to make a truly meaningful response to the threats of climate change.
Dr. Stern is a former Associate Professor of Neurology at the University of Rochester, now raising awareness of environmental issues. He is the founder of Smartfin, a project from Lost Bird, an art-based initiative focusing on the earth. Smartfin testing is currently being conducted by researchers at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in San Diego, California.
